    • Notes from Noeline Howitt - Sustins Family History 1993:

Jane, being only six years of age when her parents died, was brought up by a Mrs Fletcher at Onehunga.

John Stafford came to New Zealand with the aim of "taking up land".
However, he was under age so went to the goldfields at Thames instead.

In February 1872 Jane wrote to Sarah saying she was going to Thames to stay for a few weeks with Phoebe, and it is possible that Jane and John met at this time. They were married in February of the following year. They lived up the Waiotahi Creek, Thames, where most of the children were born.
Some of their sons studied at the School of Mines, but none became miners.

After the death of Jane, John and those of his younger children who were still at home left the Thames and went to live in Waihi. He was a good gardener, and people enquiring the direction to John Stafford's home were told to go down the road until they reached the house with the best garden.
