Laura - illegitimate daughter of Ann Jenkins of Lamphy Village, a servant
      *******************
A story of Laura's background as told by Mrs Winifred Westrupp (Nelson, NZ) is thus:
Laura Kem was the daughter of an officer in the Indian Army and his wife, whose maiden name was Jenkins. Laura was sent home to England to complete her education(or "finishing", and while there fell in love with Charles Moore and married him (21/April 1840, St Martin in the Fields, London).
This union was so unacceptable to Laura's parents that they disowned her, forbid her to ever use the name "Kem", and forced them to NZ with sufficient money to keep them in comparative comfort for 10 years.
(They arrived in Auckland NZ on 13/April 1857 on the "Cashmere")
After living in Auckland for some time they went to Australia and then to Nelson NZ about 1863.
      Note: brackets ( --- ) are mine.

      Comments on the above:
Charles & Laura travelled to London from Bradfield  to marry .... a long way ???
To wait 1840-1857 seems a long time before being banished from the shores !!!!
A son James Frederick was born in Auckland NZ February 1860.

      Search:
Was there an Indian Army Officer by the name of Kem (about 1816-1840)  with a daughter Laura ?
Was his wife's name Jenkins ?

When Laura died in 1906, the death entry in the register stated that she had been resident in NZ for 50 years, her father was Henry Kem, Gentleman, and her mother Ann Kem, maiden name Jenkins.
