      DROWNING FATALITY., Manawatu Standard, Volume XLI, Issue 8792, 6 February 1909
      A sad drowning recently occurred in the Manawatu river at Terrace End yesterday afternoon. It appears that two girls, named Elsie Mary Eveline Hansen and Florrie Thompson, each 12 years of age, and residents of Terrace End, went down to the river below Brightwater Terrace about half a chain above the first groin at 3 o'clock, together with a boy named George Gifkins, aged 10 years. Just at the point mentioned a big tree juts out from the bank into the river and the two girls, as perhaps they and no doubt others had often done before, walked out over the water towards the end of the tree. By some unfortunate chance Florrie Thompson slipped and both girls fell into the river ....... Consequently it can easily be understood that the boy Gifkin, who remained on the bank, was a helpless, terrified spectator. The scared children at once rushed home and informed their
      parents of the sad event .........
